Outdoorsy vs. Outsidesy

Who moves to Oregon and doesn’t love the great outdoors? The answer in my head is close to nobody, because you would be crazy to move out here and not love it. There is “great outdoors” everywhere you look. My backyard is full of it!

I’ve got blackberry bushes, lavender, clover, and hopefully soon, some yarrow and marigolds will start popping up. Not to mention the couple of mountains I can see from the main roads driving around Portland and the literal forest across the St. John’s Bridge.

I’ve spent more time in my backyard in the past two months of living here than I did all of the past five years living in Austin. Due to the weather, the nature growing, or the rose colored glasses I may still have on, I love being outside.

Now here may come the controversial part. I am not outdoorsy. I am not all about camping in the woods, and jumping in the lake, and kayaking in the sun, and hiking up the tallest mountain. This is great and all, and I’m even up for it every once in a while, but the adventurous side of me does not typically love this stuff. I am not outdoorsy.

I am, what I would describe as, outsidesy, quoting from a tiktok I saw months ago. I want to have a picnic in the park, read my book in the backyard, eat dinner on the restaurant patio, and take a nap on the beach. I want to have all my windows open with a cool breeze coming in all day long. I especially want to have a dreamy photo session at sunset and soak in the last few rays of sun. This is outsidesy, and I love being outsidesy!

I love the idea of the great outdoors, and I think I always will. Maybe I need another word to call it, the “small outdoors”? I mean, heck, one day I want to have ducks and a vegetable garden in my backyard. I’ll make my own great outdoors in my backyard and enjoy the true great outdoors from a picnic blanket to take in the view. Not much of a journal entry on wedding photography, rather just some thoughts on the beautiful outside world in Portland.

Hugs,
Maz
